Schools Turn Anti-Bullying Bill into Action

Teens in groupFollowing the deaths of two Pioneer Valley students, months of debate, and emotional appeals, bullying has been outlawed in Massachusetts. But schools have only months to turn the law into action. In the Hampden-Wilbraham school district, the fight against school bullying has already begun. LifeSkills Training is a program for teachers to reduce violence in schools, granted to the district through the Safe Schools/ Healthy Students program.

United Way of Indian River County Divides $1.7 Million among 41 Local Nonprofits

TCPalmsUnited Way of Indian River County will invest more than $1.7 million in 41 local community programs this year, including three new programs focusing on children of prisoners, unemployed workers, and teens, according to a news release.

About 120 local volunteers met in April and May to decide how the $1,725,566 raised during the United Way's annual campaign would be spent. Lisa Djahed, marketing director for United Way of Indian River County, said her organization chose programs relevant to local issues. The Substance Awareness Council of Indian River County received $10,000 for its LifeSkills Training program.

Driven to Safety: CTC Aims to Reduce Risk Factors for Area Teens

Care for the YouthSchool's out for summer, and as kids anticipate an extended vacation, parents need to be mindful of the risk factors summer freedom can bring.

That's the message Norristown Area Communities That Care For Youth (CTC), a coalition dedicated to reducing those risk factors that could lead to adolescent drug use and violence and enhancing protective factors that shield them from such problems wants to get across. Read more...

Waynesville Elementary School Implements LST

Waynesville Elementary SchooRecently, Waynesville Elementary School received a mini-grant from the Mental Health & Recovery Centers of Warren County. Prevention Specialist Charlie Hartman  has been working with the 3rd/4th grade teachers to provide LifeSkills Training, an evidence-based prevention program. Skills include self-esteem, decision-making, smoking, advertising, stress management, communication skills, social skills, and assertiveness. Eligibility: State educational agencies.

Amount: One to seven awards ranging from $1 million to $12 million each.
