United Way of Laurel Highlands Aims to Raise $1.5 Million for Prevention

During a campaign kickoff at the University of Pittsburgh, United Way said money raised would be used to fund evidence-based programs in support of the charity's three main focuses: early childhood development, parental engagement, and drug-and-alcohol abuse prevention. In particular, United Way plans to continue expanding the impact of Botvin LifeSkills Training in schools across Cambria and Somerset counties. Read more...

Fall River Middle Schools Adopt New Health Curricula Incorporating Opioid Prevention

Beginning this school year, students in grades 6-8 will see a standard health curriculum which incorporates Botvin LifeSkills Training, a substance abuse prevention program. An Open Dialogue at NPN: Issues in Substance Misuse Prevention Research

At the National Prevention Network Conference in Buffalo, NY, panelists Frances Harding, Director of SAMHSA; J. David Hawkins, Ph.D., Professor at University of Washington School of Social Work; and Gilbert J. Botvin, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at Cornell University's Weill Medical College, discussed prevention research efforts. The interactive session followed a talk-show-type format, in which the panelists each provided opening remarks followed by a facilitated discussion, and a question-and-answer period with the audience. Commissioners Approve Funding for Drug Prevention

Pueblo County, CO, commissioners approved $80,000 for a new substance abuse prevention program for Pueblo Middle School students. The Pueblo Health Department is going to use the money to bring an existing program, the Botvin LifeSkills Training Program, to teach middle school students the dangers of marijuana and substance abuse. Dr. Williams Keynotes Prevention of Youth Substance Abuse in Rural Communities Conference

Dr. Christopher Williams of National Health Promotion Associates presented an hour-long talk “Unleashing the Power of Prevention through LifeSkills Training," followed by a breakout session in South Carolina in early August. The presentation focused on the core elements of the Botvin LifeSkills Training program that have been proven through rigorous scientific study to yield significant results in reducing tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, and Rx drug abuse.
