How Social-Emotional Learning is Supported through the Botvin LifeSkills Training Program

Under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), schools can expand their social-emotional learning (SEL) programs to include teaching children self-control, resolving conflicts, making responsible decisions, and avoiding risky behaviors. LifeSkills Training (LST) not only supports SEL competencies but also promotes healthy alternatives to risky behavior through activities designed to teach students the necessary skills to resist social (peer) pressures. LST helps students develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence, enables students to effectively cope with anxiety, and enhances their decision-making and problem-solving skills. Research shows that these "soft skills" benefit children for their entire lives and can have a positive impact on schools.

LST Shields Teens from Prescription Opioid Misuse

rx

According to a NIDA-supported study, the LifeSkills Training (LST) program, delivered in 7th grade classrooms, helps children avoid misusing prescription opioids throughout their teen years. That means the LST program – as-is – helps to reduce opioid misuse. The combination of drug resistance skills and life skills is proven to be a powerful formula for preventing drug use.  However, as schools and communities search for a specific opioid misuse prevention program, National Health Promotion Associates, the researchers behind LST, are developing a prescription drug abuse prevention module to help young adults learn healthy behavioral social and self-regulation skills such as managing stress and anxiety, as well as drug resistance skills.

Course Teaches 8th Graders the Right Skills to Say ‘No’

Over the last six years, LST has been implemented in classrooms across Cambria and Somerset counties in PA. Lessons that reached 160 students in 2011 are now being taught to 7,500 in all 11 of Somerset County’s middle schools and 13 Cambria County ones. “We know this program works. We’ve seen the results.” McKinney and Cambria County Drug Coalition Executive Director Ronna Yablonski said the region will see the real benefits of Botvin’s results in the years and decades to come as a wave of young adults become adults who make better decisions than past generations. Massachusetts Attorney General Awards Opioid Prevention Grants for LifeSkills Training

Massachuetts Attorney General Maura Healey called for more opioid prevention and treatment programs to help end the epidemic that is ravaging the country, state and region. Citing a statistic that 90% of adults with a drug or alcohol addiction started when they were under 18 years old, Healey stressed the need for youth education programs to teach students of all ages about the dangers of opioid use and addiction.

Healey’s office recently awarded $700,000 in grants to support school-based prevention education initiatives to address opioid dependence and addiction. Cities received grants to bring the Botvin LifeSkills Training program to their schools. Read more...
