Youth Program Curbs Risky Behaviors with Help of LST
A new study found that a community-based prevention program that targeted schools, families, and youth-focused programs reduced consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, and curbed delinquent behavior among area youth. Communities That Care (CTC) is a system that empowers communities to use advances from prevention science to guide their prevention efforts which includes Botvin LifeSkills Training.

VTSF Awards Grant to School District for LST Implementation
Caroline County Public Schools has been awarded a one-year grant funded by the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation (VTSF) to continue the Botvin LifeSkills Training Program at Caroline Middle School during the 2009-2010 school year.

County Receives Grant; Implements LST
Loudoun County has received a three-year foundation grant to continue its tobacco prevention programs. The grant will be used to support one part-time instructor to provide tobacco prevention programming to at-risk elementary, middle and high school-age youths.

School Districts Transition from DARE, Implementing Top-rated LST Instead
Grapevine-Colleyville is the latest North Texas school district to drop out of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program. If its exit is any indication, the pioneering anti-drug abuse program for students is not as popular as it once was in the region.

LST Helps West Virginia Kick the Habit
Due to high rates of tobacco use, the West Virginia Division of Tobacco Prevention is implementing a research-based, comprehensive tobacco control program. The results of the program show a 34% quit rate and a 72% reduction over a single school year.

Summer Camps Provide Positive Experiences
Children in the Port Huron area participated in the Save Our Neighborhood and Streets (S.O.N.S.) summer camps. The primary goal of the S.O.N.S. summer programs was to provide positive opportunities and experiences for area children.

Cutting Prevention Funds Could Prove Too Costly
For more than a decade, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Deliquency (PCCD) has helped communities implement evidence-based initiatives, such as Botvin LifeSkills Training, to encourage healthy youth development. Now these programs could be in danger as a result of budget cuts.

Help Rolls into Fairfield, CA by Way of LST Parent Program
The City of Fairfield, CA rolled out a new Parent Program Campaign for Mother's Day. The city put on a special Botvin LifeSkills Training workshop for parents who wanted to keep their kids out of trouble and away from controlled substances.

New Orleans-Based Non-Profit Receives CADA Award Nomination
Healing Hearts for Community Development (HHCD), a non-profit organization in New Orleans, was nominated by the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities to receive the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) Annual Excellence in Prevention Award.
